Sudan army shoots down RSF drones targeting key northern sites

(MENAFN) The Sudanese army said on Monday that it successfully intercepted suicide drones launched by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeting the Merowe Dam—Sudan’s largest—and several military sites in the country’s north.

According to a statement from the army’s 19th Infantry Division, the RSF fired multiple drones at the division’s headquarters, the Merowe Dam, and a northern airbase. “All the drones were shot down before reaching their targets,” the statement said, adding that the army is “fully prepared to counter any threats” posed by RSF forces.

There was no immediate response from the RSF regarding the claims.

The incident comes a day after similar drone attacks targeted El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan, and locations in White Nile State in southern Sudan. Sudanese authorities have repeatedly accused the RSF of using drones against civilian infrastructure, including power stations, though the rebel group has largely refrained from commenting.

In the ongoing conflict, the RSF now controls most of Darfur’s five states, except for some northern areas of North Darfur still held by the army. Meanwhile, the Sudanese military maintains dominance over most of the remaining 13 states, including the capital Khartoum.

The violent struggle between the army and RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in thousands of deaths and displaced millions across Sudan.
