Trump Says US Avoided Targeting Iran’s Military, Citing Iraq War Lessons
According to reports, Trump emphasized that the US “left the military alone” while still conducting operations against other parts of Iran’s leadership and infrastructure.
He argued that broad destruction in wartime can have long-term consequences for national recovery, saying, “People would be surprised to hear that, because mistakes have been made in wars where you wipe out everybody, and then you have a country that's for 40 years can never rebuild,”
Trump also referenced the Iraq conflict as an example of what he views as flawed American decision-making in previous military engagements. He said, “You look at what happened with Iraq; we did so badly, that was such a foolish thing,”
In the same remarks, he repeated his assertion that Iran would have managed to acquire nuclear weapons if the US had not carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities using B-2 bombers last June. He further indicated that he was not rushing toward any final agreement with Tehran, stating he was “in no hurry”
He added that diplomatic timing was crucial for achieving favorable outcomes, saying, “If you are in a hurry, you won't make a good deal,” and also claimed the negotiations were nearing completion, describing them as “close to a very good deal.”
Trump also stressed that preventing nuclear weapon development remained his central requirement in any potential agreement. He referred to this condition as “one guarantee” and stated, “The one guarantee that I have to have is that there will be no nuclear weapons, they've agreed to that,” although Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed any such agreement.
