AdCare Hospital Expands Detox Services with New 12-Bed Unit, Helping More People Access Care in Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass., Sept. 09, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- For decades, AdCare Hospital has been a staple in the Worcester community, providing hospital-level detox services for people struggling with substance use disorders. Until now, patients had to meet ASAM Level 4.0 criteria, the most intensive level of medically managed withdrawal care, to be admitted to its inpatient detox program. Now, the hospital is expanding the range of patients it can treat with a new 12-bed unit for men who need medical support during detox but whose medical needs do not require hospitalization.

The new unit at the Worcester treatment center meets ASAM Level 3.7 criteria, providing 24-hour medical detox services and support for patients withdrawing from alcohol and/or drugs. In addition to the 11 detox beds, the 12th bed in the new unit will be reserved for patients needing clinical stabilization after detox. This clinical stabilization bed meets ASAM Level 3.5 criteria, further expanding the breadth of services AdCare Hospital can provide.

“We heard from people every day who needed treatment but did not meet the criteria for our existing program,” said Laura Ames, Executive Director of AdCare Hospital. “It was disheartening to know we had the expertise to help, but not the appropriate level of care to admit them. We felt a responsibility to fill that gap as a trusted community partner. This expansion allows more people to benefit from the experience, compassion, and high-quality care that AdCare Hospital has provided for decades.”

The additional detox unit is now accepting male patients seeking treatment for dependence on substances such as alcohol, opioids, kratom, sedatives, and other drugs for which withdrawal can be distressing, dangerous, or even life-threatening.

“Physical dependence on alcohol or drugs can be incredibly difficult to overcome alone,” said Dr. Mohammad Alhabbal, Medical Director. “Our medical team has extensive experience helping patients manage withdrawal safely and as comfortably as possible.”

“We know that early access to care saves lives,” said Ames. “We are encouraged by the significant decline in overdose deaths last year in Massachusetts and pleased to help continue that progress with expanded access to treatment at our facility.”
