Navy Optometrist at MCRD San Diego Named 2026 AFOS Navy Optometrist of the Year

A Navy Medical Service Corps officer stationed at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego was selected as the 2026 Navy Optometrist of the Year by the Association of Armed Forces and Federal Optometric Services.

Cmdr. Mary Beth Linnell, optometry division officer assigned to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Unit MCRD San Diego under Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego, was recognized for sustained clinical excellence, leadership, and critical contributions to warfighter readiness at one of the nation's premier recruit accession points.

Linnell oversees comprehensive visual readiness assessments and rapid optical fabrication and delivery for more than 17,000 newly arrived Marine recruits passing through MCRD San Diego each year. From initial receiving week through combat marksmanship training, recruit success depends heavily on immediate, acute refractive care to ensure recruits meet rigorous physical fitness and weapons qualification standards without administrative or medical delays.

Her frontline leadership directly advances the priorities set forth in the Defense Health Agency’s Fiscal Year 2027 Campaign Order. Under the CAMPO – which operationalizes the DHA's mandate as a requirements-driven Combat Support Agency – the enterprise is laser-focused on Line of Effort 1: Deliver Warfighter Medical Readiness, eliminating lost duty days, and ensuring service members are fully deployable.

"Optometry on the recruit depot is far more than routine clinical care; it is an indispensable driver of force generation and combat lethality," said Capt. Joselyn Mercado-Abadie, officer in charge of NMRTC San Diego’s Green District, which encompasses both MCRD and Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. "Commander Linnell is on the ground every day, moving fast, anticipating operational requirements, and ensuring our recruits achieve optimal visual acuity without training days lost. Her recognition by AFOS exemplifies the deckplate agility and high reliability that DHA and Navy Medicine demand."

The annual AFOS awards recognize optometrists across the military departments and federal agencies – including the Navy, Army, Air Force, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Indian Health Service – who exhibit outstanding clinical expertise, proactive leadership, and dedication to federal service optometry.

For Linnell, the award reflects the collective devotion of the hospital corpsmen, civilian technicians, and support staff delivering high-tempo care across the depot clinic floor.

"Ensuring our nation's newest warfighters have the visual capability to succeed downrange begins on day one of recruit training," Linnell said. "Acute vision is essential to combat marksmanship, night operations, and survivability. I am deeply honored by AFOS, but this recognition belongs to our entire team at MCRD. We share a clear purpose: ensuring every recruit is medically ready, physically capable, and prepared to answer the call."

As a key component of Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) – one of the enterprise's flagship Core 15 military medical treatment facilities – the clinic's high-volume throughput directly underwrites the joint force's operational posture.

"Everything we do across the enterprise exists for one fundamental purpose, and that is to support warfighter medical readiness," said Capt. Jerry J. Bailey, commander NMRTC San Diego and director of NMCSD. "Commander Linnell exemplifies the standard expected of our medical warriors. By ensuring thousands of new Marines enter the operational fleet physically qualified and ready to fight, she translates strategic campaign objectives into tangible combat capability and increased lethality. She has set a benchmark of excellence for military optometry across the total force."

NMRTC San Diego's mission is to prepare service members for deployment in support of operational forces, deliver high-quality health care services, and shape the future of military medicine through education, training, and research.

NMCSD employs more than 5,600 active-duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to deliver exceptional care.
